Payslip format and pay rules, explained

How is overtime worked out on the payslip?

Article 19(2) pays overtime at the wage for normal hours, calculated on the basic wage, plus an increase of not less than 25%. Between 10 pm and 4 am the increase is not less than 50% (Article 19(3)), and workers on shifts are excluded from that clause. The helper reads the hourly basic wage as the monthly basic wage divided by 30 days (Article 67) and by 8 hours (the Article 17 maximum for a normal day). That is a reading of those two articles, not a formula the law writes out, and you can change the hours per day. The premiums start at the legal minimum and can be raised, not lowered.

What is paid for working a weekend or a public holiday?

For a weekend worked, Article 19(4) gives another day off, or that day's wage at the normal working-day rate plus an increase of not less than 50% of the basic wage for that day. For a public holiday, Article 28(2) gives the same choice: another day off, or the wage for that day plus an increase of not less than 50% of the basic wage. The helper works out the paid alternative as two parts: the day's pay, which is the monthly wage divided by 30, plus the premium, which is at least 50% of the basic wage for that day (the monthly basic wage divided by 30). Dividing by 30 in both parts is a reading of Article 67, not a formula the law writes out.

How is unpaid leave deducted?

Article 33 allows unpaid leave with the employer's approval, and says it is not included in the service term. The helper deducts days multiplied by the contract wage (basic wage plus allowances) divided by 30. The per-day figure is a reading of Article 67, not a rate the law sets.

How much can an employer deduct from a salary?

Article 25(1) lists the only cases in which an amount may be deducted or withheld from the wage. Article 25(2) says that, in all cases, the total deducted or withheld may not exceed 50% of the wage. Article 25(1) also caps some single causes: 20% of the wage for overpayments, 5% for penalties, a quarter of the wage for court debts (alimony excepted), and 5 days' wage a month for damage to the employer's property. The payslip shows a notice when your deductions pass half the wage. It is a notice and does not block you, because the form cannot tell which Article 25(1) case a line falls under.

The law behind these figures

Every figure on this page comes from the rules below, checked 17 October 2026.

Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021

  • Art. 19(2)Hours beyond the normal working hours are overtime, paid at the wage for normal hours, calculated on the basic wage, plus an increase of not less than 25% of that wage.
  • Art. 19(3)Overtime worked between 10 pm and 4 am is paid at the normal-hours wage, calculated on the basic wage, plus an increase of not less than 50% of that wage. Workers on shifts are excluded from this clause.
  • Art. 17(1)The maximum normal working hours are 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week.

  • Art. 28(2)If work conditions require a worker to work on a public holiday, the employer compensates with another day off for each day worked, or pays the wage for that day at the normal working-day rate, plus an increase of not less than 50% of the basic wage for that day.
  • Art. 33With the employer's approval a worker may take unpaid leave. That leave is not included in the service term at the employer or in the period of contribution to the retirement scheme.
