Resignation letters, explained

How much notice must I give when I resign in the UAE?

Article 43(1) of Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 says either party may end the employment contract for a legitimate reason by written notice. The notice period is the one agreed in the contract, and it cannot be less than 30 days or more than 90 days. This form refuses a notice period outside that range.

When does my notice period start?

The form counts it from the day after the notice date. If you are on leave, Article 35 says the notice period does not begin until the day after the day you are scheduled to return from leave, unless both parties agree otherwise, so enter the day you are due back in the leave field, and the notice starts the day after.

Do I keep working and get paid during the notice period?

The contract stays valid throughout the notice period and you are entitled to your full wage for it, at the last wage you were getting. You work during it if the employer asks you to (Art. 43(2)).

What happens if I do not work my notice period?

The party that did not keep to the notice period pays the other a notice period allowance, equal to the worker's wage for the full notice period or the part left (Art. 43(3)). The notice period calculator works out the amount from your wage and the days left.

What if I am still on probation?

Article 9 sets different notice. If you want to move to another employer in the UAE during probation, you notify your employer in writing at least one month ahead (Art. 9(3)), and the new employer compensates the original employer for the costs of recruitment or contracting, unless they agree otherwise. If you are a foreign worker ending the contract to leave the UAE, the notice is at least 14 days (Art. 9(4)); if you return and get a new work permit within 3 months of leaving, the new employer pays that compensation unless you and your original employer agree otherwise, and under Art. 9(6) a foreign worker who leaves without following the article is not granted a work permit for one year. Choose the probation case on the form and the minimum changes to match.

Is anything I type here saved?

No. The letter is made in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing about you is stored. Your name, address and the other details are gone when you close the tab.
