How the percentage calculator works
How is percentage change worked out?
Take the new value, subtract the old one, divide by the old one and multiply by 100. Going from 100 to 125 is +25%. Going from 80 to 60 is -25%. The percentage is always measured against where you started, so a rise of 25% followed by a fall of 25% does not bring you back to the start. A change from 0 has no percentage.
Why are discounts worked out in fils?
A fils is one hundredth of a dirham, the smallest amount a price can carry. The discount is rounded to the nearest fils, with exact halves rounded up, so the discount, the price after it and the VAT on it always add up to figures you could actually charge. For example, 15% off AED 199.99 is AED 29.9985, which becomes AED 30.00.
How is the VAT worked out?
VAT is 5% of the price after the discount, rounded to the nearest fils with halves rounded up. The result shows the price both before and after VAT so you can quote either.
Does it work for mark-ups?
Yes. To add a mark-up, use "A percentage of a number" to find the amount and add it to the cost, or use "Percentage change" with the cost and the selling price to see the mark-up you have applied.
