Word count and character count, explained

How are words counted in Arabic and English?

The counter uses your browser's own word-boundary rules for the language, not a split on spaces. Arabic words, English words and numbers each count as one, and punctuation on its own does not count. A mixed line such as an Arabic greeting followed by "hello world" counts every word in both scripts. Characters are counted as a reader sees them, so an accented letter or an emoji with a skin tone counts once.

Why do SMS parts change when the text has Arabic?

A text message holds 160 units when every character is in the standard GSM 7-bit alphabet, which covers English letters, digits and common punctuation. Any Arabic letter, emoji or other character outside that alphabet switches the whole message to UCS-2, which holds only 70 units. Longer messages are split and each part carries a small header, so a part holds 153 units in GSM 7-bit and 67 in UCS-2. A few characters, such as { } [ ] \ ^ ~ | and the euro sign, count as 2 units.

How are sentences counted?

Sentence counts follow your browser's own rules for the language, so an abbreviation such as Dr. or Mr. can add a sentence. Treat the figure as a guide, not an exact count.

What reading and speaking speeds does it assume?

It assumes 238 words a minute for silent reading and 150 words a minute for speaking aloud. Both are common averages for adults, so treat the times as a rough guide. Slower or more technical text takes longer.

Are the platform limits exact?

They are the figures most people work to: 280 for an X post, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post, 160 for a meta description, 60 for a page title and 2,200 for an Instagram caption. Platforms change their rules and count some things, such as links, in their own way, so check the platform before you publish. Search engines also cut titles and descriptions by pixel width, not by characters.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The word counter runs in your browser on this page and nothing you type leaves your device.
