What are the UTM fields for?
UTM parameters are labels added to the end of a web address so your analytics can tell where a visit came from. Source is the site or sender, such as google or newsletter. Medium is the kind of channel, such as cpc, email or paid-social. Campaign is the promotion the link belongs to. Term holds the paid keyword and content tells two ads or links to the same page apart. Source, medium and campaign are the ones to always fill in.
Why does lower case matter?
Analytics tools treat Email, email and EMAIL as three different values, so one campaign is split across several rows in your reports. Keeping every value in lower case, with hyphens instead of spaces, keeps each campaign in one row. The tidy option does this for you, and you can switch it off if your reports already use another style.
What happens to a web address that already has parameters?
The tool keeps the existing query exactly as you typed it and adds only the utm_ parameters at the end. If the address already carries a utm_ value, it is replaced in the same place, so a link never has the same field twice. The fragment, the part after the # sign, is kept. If you leave out https://, it is added. Ad-platform placeholders such as {keyword} or {{campaign.name}} are kept as typed, so Google or Meta can fill them in.
Can I turn the link into a QR code?
Yes. The link under the result opens the QR code generator with the finished address already filled in, ready to download for print. The address is passed in the part of the page address after the # sign, which stays in your browser and is not sent to any server.
