Return on investment, explained
What is the ROI formula?
ROI is the amount returned minus the cost, divided by the cost, shown as a percentage. Spending 10,000 and getting back 13,000 gives a gain of 3,000, which is 30% of the cost. A negative result means you got back less than you spent: 10,000 returning 4,000 is minus 60%.
What is the difference between ROI and annualised ROI?
ROI is the total return over the whole period, however long it took. Annualised ROI turns that into the yearly rate that would give the same result if it compounded each year. A 30% return over 2 years is 14.02% a year, not 15%, because each year builds on the one before. Use the yearly rate to compare projects that took different lengths of time.
What if nothing came back?
If the amount returned is 0, the whole cost is lost and the yearly rate cannot be worked out in the usual way, so it is shown as minus 100% a year.
How is payback time worked out?
Payback in months is the cost divided by the gain you expect each month. A cost of 12,000 with a gain of 1,000 a month pays back in 12 months. If the monthly gain is 0 or less, the cost is never earned back and no payback time is shown.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
