Working Away From the Office How on-duty and remote requests work, and why being out of the office is a request rather than a missing day.

If you are working but not clocking in from your usual place, the day is recorded through a request rather than left as an absence. Two kinds exist, and they answer different questions.

On Duty

For a specific day when you are working elsewhere. Two types:

  • Client visit - you are with a customer.
  • Working from home - a single day at home.

Give the date, the type and a reason. Once approved, the day is recorded as attendance with its source marked on duty approved - so it reads as a worked day, and the trail shows why it was not a normal clock-in.

Remote Mode

For a period rather than a day. Give a start date, an end date and a reason, and once approved the stretch is treated as remote working.

Use on duty for a day, remote mode for a spell. Submitting fifteen separate on-duty requests for a three-week trip is a sign you wanted remote mode.

Why It Matters

An unexplained day with no clock-in looks identical to an absence. Attendance feeds payroll and it feeds any conversation about reliability, so a day spent at a customer site should not have to be reconstructed from memory three months later.

Keep in mind

Approve these promptly. An unapproved on-duty request leaves a day that is neither attendance nor leave, and the gap is only noticed when payroll runs or someone questions a record.

Approval

Both go to your approver, and both record who approved them and when. A rejection carries a reason.

Common Questions

I worked from home without asking. What now? Submit the request for that date. It is better recorded late than not at all, and your HR admin can also correct attendance directly with a reason.

Does remote work need approval every time? That depends on your organisation's policy. The platform can record either arrangement; what requires approval is a policy decision, and it belongs in a written policy people have acknowledged.

Is this the same as leave? No. Leave is time off and comes out of a balance. These are working days in a different place, and they cost nothing.

Can a manager submit on someone's behalf? An HR admin can create the attendance record directly, which is recorded as an override with a reason.
